It’s done! My year-long 12 Covers-12 Months recording project on which I embarked on around Chistmastime 2005 is ending today with the upload release of my December cover – a cover of Cheap Trick’s “Auf Widersehen”.
This song is a smokin’ rocker from Cheap Trick’s 1978 LP Heaven Tonight. Though this song was already in the band’s live sets long before the release – I’m sure Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen’s years in Europe in the early 1970s gave some inspiration to this track.
I’m among the many who consider Cheap Trick’s first 3 LPs to be untouchably great (with the exception being Tom Werman’s stale production on the 2nd LP “In Color”), and ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ qualifies as one of the great ones by the band – a smashing rocker, with dark lyrics turned inside out and that oh-so-unmistakeable voice of Robin Zander, one of the best rock and roll vocalists over the past 30 years.
I hope you liked my covers project – I had a blast doing them all year! To celebrate, I’m doing a live show this Wednesday night at Pianos rock club in New York this Wednesday (Dec. 6th) at 8pm. The show’s free, so come out and hear me rip through as many as I can in a 45 minute set.
Au Revoir, Auf Wiedersehen!
