What do I feel like writing about?

What do you want me to write about? The Love records that no one really liked (but I did)? The troubling fact that Man on Fire is on the main HBO channel tonight, a Saturday, at 10pm? How about the Ebony Magazine Family Reunion that I attended this afternoon. Free, in an East Memphis park, with MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, and Con Funk Shun.

After blazing heat, what seemed like hours of the sassy lady from WDIA (the country’s first African American redio station) MC-ing bad to awesome jokes, and a really bad New Jersey Boyz II Men knockoff….

MC Lyte was good (though I’m not that familiar or that big of a fan) and knocked out some amazing freestyle (I guess…I like Ford’s version better)…

The MC that warmed up the crowd for Doug E. Fresh….whole ‘nother story. His theme was a very loose interpretation of “the old school,” which I soon took to mean “any super obvious piece of pop culture that old people remember.”

“HOW MANY OF YA’LL REMEMBER TURNIN’ ON THE TV AND HEARIN’ THIS….” (DJ’s break into Sanford and Son theme)

Repeat for Fat Albert, The Jeffersons, and for some reason, Cheers (at which point a lady turned to us and said, “I know ya’ll know that one!!!”…and her friend got mad at her for saying it!!)

Then there was a lot of rambling and yelling (OOOOOOOHHH THIS PARTY IS GETTIN’ HOT!!!!!) over a cross section of million-sellers-just-add-“funk” like “Brick House,” “Play That Funky Music,” etc….

Oh, and “OLD SCHOOL!!!!! I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT THE OLD SCHOOL!!!! HOW MANY OF YA’LL REMEMBER PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICHES?!?!?!?” (did they go somewhere?)

“HOW MANY OF YA’LL HAVE EVER EATEN A PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH?!?!?! HOW MANY OF YA’LL STILL EAT PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICHES?!?!?!”

….ah, there’s more, but…..

Oh, Doug E. Fresh was on next. Ran through the hits….not bad, respectable 35 minute set….

…and we got a “gift bag” on the way out that contained all Proctor and Gamble products (the Tide logo was everywhere)…

(breath)….what’s next?

Failed Pilot has a new fan:

“While broken down and destitute recently, I helped pass the time by reading the entertaining and revelatory writing at failedpilot.com. Thank you to Andrew for making this stuff available to the internet freeloaders, and thank you to Lani at the Holiday Inn in ?????, Nebraska, (across the road from the dishonest mechanic) for letting me use the hotel lobby computer while waiting for my radiator rebuild to be completed.”
