“Just because I’m Irish, which he says he should have known…
By my name Sweeney, And Irish that I am.
Doesn’t mean I know each Irish Bar
So smokey and so dark.
I’m more likely to be seen in Central Park.”
Of all the great Irish songs out there, I’m kinda fond of the song “Just Because I’m Irish” penned by Jonathan Richman for his 1995 CD You Must Ask the Heart. It’s a bouncing little melody that has Jonathan singing with a young Irish lass and wondering why she doesn’t know Irish bars in NY – her reply is she’d basically be somewhere else.
