the war at home

So let’s see. In the past two months, the following things have happened:

1) Pipe bombs and threatening letters found against Jewish residents of University City, MO (where I live).

2) One person dead and five injured at the Jewish Federation in Seattle (where I used to live and go to shul). The shooter identified himself as a Muslim and said, “These are Jews and I’m tired of getting pushed around and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East.” Note: he didn’t say “these are Zionists” or “these are supporters of West Bank settlements” or “these are IDF members who may or may not have used disproportionate force in their defense against Hezbollah in Lebanon.” He didn’t care to make those distinctions, and he didn’t care to have a discussion. He was looking for Jews to kill, any Jews.

3) Sites like Daily Kos moving progressively (no pun intended, seriously) toward blatant Jew-bashing under the guise of anti-Zionism. Like this. And this.

It’s all getting pretty close to home. Slowly but surely, Jews are beginning to be threatened, hurt and killed in America. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t scare the hell out of me.

OK, some pseudo-comic relief: That wacky Mel Gibson. The kind of drunken buffoonery that doesn’t deserve anything but derisive laughter. (Oops, not so fast: Abe Foxman just issued a press release.)
